I was working as the assistant to the director of a research institute in 2012 when I was first given the opportunity to manage some student research funds and, then, to start managing external research funding for a few faculty fellows within the institute. After being given a few more PIs to manage awards for, and during a reorganization, I applied for a Grant Analyst position with the UAA College of Arts and Sciences and was hired into the position. On-the-job training, training through NCURA, and educating myself in order to take the Certified Research Administrator exam broadened my knowledge of research administration (I received CRA certification initially in 2018 and renewed it in 2023).
