2026-27 COAST Rapid Response Funding Program

About this program

The California State University Council on Ocean Affairs, Science & Technology (CSU COAST) offers $2,500–$5,000 Rapid Response awards for urgent ocean, coastal, and directly related watershed research prompted by unexpected events or sudden management, policy, or environmental developments. Proposals are accepted continuously through May 31, 2027, while funds remain available, and projects must begin between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027, typically within three to eight weeks of submission. CSU faculty and research associates with PI status may apply individually or collaboratively; non-tenure-track lead PIs must include a tenured or tenure-track CSU co-PI, and applicants must be COAST members in good standing without overdue obligations or an active Rapid Response award. Projects may last up to 12 months, with student involvement—particularly from groups historically excluded from marine and coastal science—strongly encouraged.
