AAG George and Viola Hoffman Award

About this program

The Association of American Geographers (AAG), through the George and Viola Hoffman Fund, offers an annual $500 award to support student research for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation on a geographical topic in Eastern Europe. Eligible research may address historical or contemporary, systematic or regional subjects in East Central and Southeast Europe, including the successor states of Yugoslavia. Applicants must submit a statement describing the research problem, methods, schedule, area-language competence, and relevant bibliography, along with letters documenting professional achievements and support from a sponsoring faculty member. Applications are due September 15, 2026, and candidates must comply with the AAG Professional Conduct Policy.
