AAG J. Warren Nystrom Award

About this program

Offered by the American Association of Geographers, the J. Warren Nystrom Award awards one or two cash prizes totaling $1,000 for a paper based on a recent dissertation; the 2027 competition opens later in 2026 with a submission deadline of September 15, 2026 (midnight EST). Applicants must have received their Ph.D. since April 1, 2024 and have been AAG members in 2024, 2025, and 2026; papers must be presented at the upcoming AAG Annual Meeting and submissions must comply with the AAG Professional Conduct Policy. Complete submission requires Annual Meeting registration and abstract submission plus a single PDF containing an abstract (≤250 words), paper text (≤5,000 words, double-spaced), references, optional acknowledgements, and a graduate advisor’s endorsement letter verifying the paper’s relation to the dissertation; finalists will give 15-minute presentations and may be invited to submit their papers to The Professional Geographer.
