AAG John Brinckerhoff Jackson Prize

About this program

The American Association of Geographers (AAG) administers the J. B. Jackson Prize to honor sole- or dual-authored books by geographers that effectively convey professional geographic insights to a general audience, with a $500 award to the author and possible Honorable Mention. Eligible books must be first published in English between October of the prior year and September of the current year; textbooks, dissertations, edited collections, and articles are ineligible. Nominations require a two-page maximum statement documenting how the work communicates geographic insights, full contact information for author(s) and nominator(s), and shipment of four copies of the nominated book to AAG headquarters; a book may be submitted to only one of AAG’s three book awards and must comply with the AAG Professional Conduct Policy. The 2027 competition opens later in 2026 and the deadline is October 15, 2026 (midnight EST); the selection committee may choose to make no award.
