Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship

About this program

The Archaeological Institute of America offers the Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship—awards up to $6,000 to support research and study related to the archaeology of Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira), including excavations, research projects, conferences, publications, and travel to present papers; funds may not be used for institutional overhead or indirect costs. The fellowship can also fund Portuguese nationals to conduct research or study in the United States, and applicants are not restricted to topics solely focused on Portuguese archaeology. U.S. and other non‑Portuguese applicants must be AIA graduate or professional members and submit U.S. transcripts; Portuguese applicants may apply without current membership but must join the AIA if selected (membership fees may be included in the budget), must provide proof of Portuguese citizenship, and graduate students planning U.S. study must be enrolled in or accepted by an accredited U.S. institution and document authorization to travel/study. All application materials (including references and transcripts) must be received in English by November 1; recipients must submit a final report and those funded for excavation/research are expected to submit an abstract within two years for consideration at the AIA Annual Meeting.
