Awards for Excellence in Teaching at the K-12 Level (2026)

About this program

The Society for Classical Studies’ Joint Committee on the Classics in American Education, in partnership with the American Classical League, invites nominations and self-applications for the 2026 Awards for Excellence in Teaching at the K–12 Level; up to two winners will receive $500, airfare and two nights’ hotel to one listed meeting (SCS Annual, ACL Institute, or CAC), and $200 for their institution’s educational resources. Eligible applicants are K–12 teachers in the United States or Canada who currently teach at least one Latin, Greek, or classics class and have a minimum of five years’ teaching experience; membership in SCS is not required and previous winners may not reapply. Applications may be submitted by the candidate or a nominator and must include candidate contact information, a statement of teaching vision/strategies, the candidate’s current CV, and a letter of recommendation uploaded by the nominator or recommender (max three pages, Times New Roman 12 pt, PDF). Completed forms are due by October 31, 2026 (online form opens approximately two to three months prior), and selection by a joint SCS/ACL subcommittee will emphasize demonstrated student learning, innovation, program growth, outreach, and commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
