Books Program

About this program

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Books program supports authors researching and writing accessible books that advance public understanding of science and technology, including works on controversial science, influential figures, daily life, science and art, women in STEM, and the culture of science. Grants are typically $60,000 or less and may be awarded to individuals or affiliated nonprofit organizations such as universities. Applicants must first submit a letter of inquiry and may submit a full proposal only if invited; proposals are reviewed for January 1, May 1, and September 1 deadlines. Invited applications must include a book argument, outline, sample chapter, budget and justification, CV, publisher agreement or strong letter of support, prior work sample, and required administrative and engagement documents.
