Erich S. Gruen Prize

About this program

Society for Classical Studies (SCS) invites submissions for the Erich S. Gruen Prize, an annual $1,000 award for the best graduate research paper on multiculturalism in the ancient Mediterranean (including topics of race, ethnicity, or cultural exchange). Eligible applicants are current graduate students enrolled in a North American graduate program as of the 2026-09-30 deadline (citizenship and immigration status do not matter); those who will have the Ph.D. by that date are ineligible. Papers must be original, unpublished, able to stand alone, anonymized, and uploaded as a PDF via apply.classicalstudies.org (submission form opens Spring 2026); maximum length is 30 pages including notes (bibliography and figures excluded), double-spaced, 12‑point font, 1‑inch margins. A Prize Committee will select the winner, and SCS reserves the right not to confer the prize if no suitable submission is found.
