Family Medicine Discovers Rapid Cycle Scientific Discovery and Innovation (FMD RapSDI)

About this program

The AAFP Foundation, in collaboration with the DARTNet Institute, offers the Family Medicine Discovers Rapid Cycle Scientific Discovery and Innovation (FMD RapSDI) program to support short-term, high-impact research addressing patient-inspired and clinical questions in real-world primary care. Two practicing family physicians will receive up to $40,000 each for project costs and/or research time, along with mentorship and research-capacity development. Applicants must be AAFP members, practicing family physicians beyond residency, and willing to serve as principal investigator for a feasible 12-month project relevant and generalizable to family medicine; prior research experience is not required and limited experience is preferred. The 2026 Round 1 application is closed, with invited finalists’ Round 2 applications due September 22, 2026.
