About this program

The Fund for Investigative Journalism provides grants and fellowships to support high-quality, nonpartisan investigative reporting for print, online and broadcast outlets, as well as books, documentaries and podcasts. Eligible applicants include freelance journalists, staff reporters and media organizations; funding options include Regular grants (up to $10,000, reviewed several times a year; next deadline Sept 14, 2026), Seed grants (up to $2,500 for preliminary reporting), Follow-up grants (up to $2,500, expedited for FIJ-funded investigations) and Alicia Patterson Fellowships ($20,000 for six months or $40,000 for 12 months). Applications for different grant types use separate forms; resubmissions of declined proposals are not accepted unless invited, multiple proposals in one cycle are generally prohibited, and previous Seed grantees may apply for Regular grants on a rolling basis with decisions typically in two to four weeks.
