About this program

The State Historical Society of Missouri’s Gary R. Kremer Center for Missouri Studies Fellowships provide a $5,000 stipend to support the completion of an 8,000–10,000-word scholarly essay on Missouri history and culture; 2027 topics are Missouri’s regional identity and Missouri and conservation. Essays must be based on significant primary-source research, demonstrate engagement with appropriate secondary literature, use Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed.) endnotes, and be completed within the calendar year of the award; completed projects may be considered for publication in the Missouri Historical Review. The competition is open to academic and independent scholars; applicants must submit by September 8, 2026 a proposal (maximum two pages) including name/institution, project title, a ≤250-word description, main sources, and a proposed timeline, plus a CV (maximum two pages).
