HHMI Gilliam Fellows Program

About this program

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Fellows Program supports PhD students and their faculty advisors in the basic biological and biomedical sciences through up to three years of stipend, tuition, fee, discretionary, and professional-development support. Fellows may later apply for up to four additional years of postdoctoral support, while advisors receive mentorship training to foster inclusive research environments. Applicants must be second- or third-year PhD or dual-degree students in good standing at an HHMI-eligible institution, have at least two years of study remaining, and be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, DACA recipients, or eligible international students. Applications are submitted jointly with a faculty PhD advisor and require an additional reference; the 2027 competition opens September 1 and closes October 27, 2026.
