History of Art Institutional Fellowships

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation offers six biennial pre‑doctoral History of European Art Institutional Fellowships—two‑year research appointments hosted at affiliated centers in Florence, Leiden, London, Munich, Paris, and Rome—to support extended dissertation research; the award is $30,000 per year currently and will increase to $45,000 per year beginning Fall 2026. Eligibility is limited to pre‑doctoral candidates who are ABD by the fellowship start and whose dissertation focuses on European art from antiquity to the early 19th century; nominees must be U.S. citizens or matriculated at an American university and require nomination by their academic department with a department chair letter. Each department may submit up to two nominees, who must apply to different host centers, and applications are submitted via the Kress online portal. The Foundation will next accept applications beginning November 1, 2026 for fellowships starting in the 2027–28 academic year; selected fellows are responsible for obtaining appropriate study visas, with Foundation guidance provided.
