Local Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP)

The California Department of Transportation’s Local Highway Safety Improvement Program provides federal funding for infrastructure projects that reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on local public roads. Awards generally range from $100,000 to $10 million, require a 10% match, and are reimbursed over a three- to five-year period. Eligible applicants are California public agencies and tribal governments that own, operate, and maintain public roadways; projects must be supported by crash data, crash potential, crash rates, or other evidence-based methods and incorporate recognized crash reduction factors. Applications are due November 2, 2026.
