Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art

About this program

The American Council of Learned Societies, with support from the Henry Luce Foundation, offers seven Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art for doctoral research on the history of US visual arts and culture, including Native American art. Awards provide $39,000 plus up to $4,500 for travel and research for a continuous nine- to twelve-month term between July 2027 and June 2028. Applicants must be doctoral students at US universities in art history or related fields, have completed all PhD requirements except the dissertation, and be US citizens, permanent residents, or otherwise qualifying US residents. Applications require an online form, an eight-page proposal with at least three images, an annotated bibliography, two reference letters, and institutional certification, and are due October 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET.
