MacDowell Fellowship

About this program

MacDowell (a private foundation) offers fee-free artist fellowships/residencies across seven disciplines—architecture, film/video, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts—with need-based stipends and travel reimbursement grants available. Applicants of any nationality and background working in those disciplines are eligible; selection is based solely on artistic excellence, with panels reviewing professional achievements, a current work sample, and a project proposal (about 300 fellows are chosen annually). Application windows: for residencies Sept 1, 2026–Feb 28, 2027 apply Jan 15–Feb 10, 2026 (deadline Feb 10, 11:59 p.m. EST); for residencies Mar 1–Aug 31, 2027 apply Aug 15–Sep 10, 2026; consult MacDowell’s application guidance and contact admissions@macdowell.org with questions.
