Mary-Kay Gamel Outreach Prize

About this program

The Society for Classical Studies offers the annual Mary-Kay Gamel Outreach Prize, a $300 award recognizing an outstanding project or program that makes aspects of classical antiquity accessible to audiences beyond Classics scholars or students at the nominee’s home institution. Projects in any medium (film, performance, public events, websites, podcasts, visual arts, print, etc.) are eligible but must be grounded in contemporary scholarship, reach a public beyond the academy, and priority is given to sustained engagement with contemporary community concerns. Current SCS members may nominate individuals or groups, and self-nominations are permitted; nominations must include a letter of nomination, a detailed project description, any produced materials, and evidence of impact (statistics, demographics, reviews, testimonials). Nominations are due 31 October 2026, remain under consideration for three years, and are judged by the Outreach Prizes Committee.
