About this program
The National Academy of Education, with support from the Spencer Foundation, offers the NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship to support doctoral candidates conducting innovative research focused on improving education. Approximately 35 fellows receive $30,000 for one academic year of dissertation writing, along with professional development retreats and mentorship; awards may begin September 1, 2027. Applicants must be doctoral candidates at a U.S. graduate institution, complete all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1, 2027, and propose an education-focused dissertation with a feasible one- to two-year completion plan. Applications are due October 8, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. ET, and must include a narrative proposal, work plan, graduate transcript, and two recommendation letters.
