Northeast Asia Council Short-Term Research Grant in the History of Japanese Sexualities and Genders

About this program

The Association for Asian Studies’ Northeast Asia Council offers one or more annual awards of up to $3,500 for short-term travel and research expenses in Japan focused on the history of Japanese sexualities and genders. Funding supports established projects requiring archival research, fieldwork, oral histories, or translation, with preference for sexuality-focused and Japan-centered work; applications are due October 1, 2026, at 5 p.m. ET. Applicants must be current AAS members, although there is no citizenship or residency requirement, and should be early-career scholars within five years of completing a PhD or PhD candidates completing dissertation-related research. Projects must not constitute initial dissertation fieldwork, and graduate applicants must submit an advisor recommendation; required materials include a project statement, budget, and CV.
