Open Research Support Grants

About this program

The Royal Historical Society offers Open Research Support Grants of £500 or £1,000 to RHS members to fund small-scale historical research activities—such as archive or site visits, interviews, and travel to academic conferences—with applications submitted via the Society’s platform; the next 2026 deadline is 4 September 2026. Awards are decided by the RHS Research Support Committee (notifications typically about six weeks after the deadline), and priority is given to applicants without access to other funding. Eligible applicants must be RHS members (postgraduate students and early career researchers within five years of completing a PhD are excluded), must not have previously received an Open Research Support Grant, must upload a current CV (an academic reference is optional), and activities taking place within four weeks of the deadline or retroactively will not be considered.
