Phoenix Award

About this program

The Children’s Literature Association’s Phoenix Award recognizes a children’s book of exceptional literary merit that was published 20 years earlier and did not receive a major award at publication; up to two honor books may also be selected. Anyone may nominate a book by October 1, with the committee evaluating submissions two years before the award is presented at the ChLA Annual Conference. Eligible books must have been originally published in English, may be retellings or edited works, and must not have won one of the specified major awards. Books are judged on literary merit, need not remain in print, and their authors need not be living.
