About this program

Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Principal Investigator Projects is a thematically open, flexible program that funds clearly defined basic research projects across all disciplines, supporting project‑specific personnel and non‑personnel costs for up to 48 months. Eligible applicants are researchers with the academic qualifications to lead the proposed project, and projects must be carried out at an Austrian research institution with the necessary infrastructure. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis via the elane portal; proposals undergo international peer review and are decided by the FWF Scientific Board at five approval meetings per year, with the number of review rounds depending on the requested funding level and an optional Matching Funds co‑financing scheme available.
