About this program

The American Chemical Society (ACS) offers the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach to honor ACS members who have significantly enhanced public understanding and appreciation of chemistry through volunteer efforts. Established in 1995, the award includes a $2,000 prize and up to $2,000 for travel and accommodations for the recipient and a guest. Eligible applicants are ACS members (Premium or Standard category) in good standing with a substantial record of volunteer public outreach activities, typically spanning over five years, and must have increased public awareness of chemistry without financial compensation. Employees of the ACS are ineligible.
