Residential Fellowships (National Humanities Center)

About this program

National Humanities Center Residential Fellowships provide competitive, stipend-supported residential research awards that give scholars time, office space, library and reference support, dining services, and participation in an on-site intellectual community to pursue sustained humanistic projects. The program requires in-person residence for a semester or academic year, so applicants whose work depends on extended fieldwork or exclusively remote research may be less suitable. Applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent (mid-career and senior scholars are especially encouraged; emerging scholars with a strong record of peer-reviewed work may apply), may come from the humanities or from other fields undertaking humanistic projects, may not use the fellowship to revise a doctoral dissertation, and should note special provisions for HBCU faculty (direct applicants must hold a continuing HBCU appointment), UNCF/Mellon applicants, international scholars, and scholars at risk.
