About this program
The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation’s Center for the History of Family Medicine sponsors this annual essay contest to support scholarly writing on the history of family medicine in the United States. Awards are $2,000 for first place and $1,000 for second place. Medical students and family medicine residents who are AAFP members may submit one original, English-language essay of up to 3,750 words in AMA style; AI-assisted essays are not eligible. Applications open August 15, 2026, and close November 1, and require the essay and a CV or résumé.
