SHGAPE Research Grant

About this program

The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) offers an annual Research Grant of up to $1,500 to support research on U.S. history from 1865 through the 1920s. Eligible applicants are SHGAPE members who are advanced doctoral students (ABD), independent scholars, or contingent faculty; recipients are chosen based on originality, historical significance, and feasibility. Applications (single Word document) due October 31, 2026 must include name/contact/title, a brief CV (max 5 pages), a proposal of no more than 750 words organized as: description of project; significance for Gilded Age/Progressive Era scholarship; work plan and timeline, an estimated budget, and for graduate students, an advisor letter confirming Ph.D. candidacy; submit materials to Professor Katherine A. Sibley at sibley@sju.edu. The winner will be notified in December 2026, will receive a ticket to the SHGAPE luncheon at the 2027 OAH meeting, must contribute a piece to the SHGAPE blog, and may use the funds between January 2027 and January 2028 for research-related expenses.
