The Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship

About this program

The Archaeological Institute of America offers the Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship, providing up to $6,000 for research and study on the archaeology of Portugal, including the Azores and Madeira, as well as excavations, publications, conferences, and research travel. Portuguese nationals may also use the fellowship to support archaeological research or study in the United States on any region or topic; institutional overhead and indirect costs are ineligible. Applicants from the United States and other countries must hold graduate- or professional-level AIA membership and submit transcripts, while Portuguese applicants must provide proof of citizenship and meet additional U.S. enrollment and authorization requirements when applicable. Applications and all supporting materials must be submitted in English by November 1, 2026, and recipients must provide a project report and, for excavation or research awards, an AIA Annual Meeting abstract within two years.
