The Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art

The Smithsonian American Art Museum, in partnership with the National Museum of the American Indian and the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, offers one annual Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art. The award supports a 12-month predoctoral or 9-month postdoctoral or senior-level residency between June 1, 2027, and August 31, 2028, with a $53,000 stipend, up to $5,000 for research travel, and additional health insurance and Washington, DC travel support. Applicants must propose research on historic or contemporary Native American artists, designers, or makers that centers Indigenous methodologies, knowledge, and communities and draws on both museums’ resources. Eligible applicants include doctoral candidates who have completed coursework and examinations, scholars with a PhD earned within the past five years, and senior scholars with a PhD earned before October 15, 2021, or equivalent professional accomplishment; applications are due October 15, 2026, and require SAAM and NMAI advisors plus academic and Indigenous community support letters.
