The Geoffrey Dunn MD Research Award in Surgical Palliative Care

About this program

The Association for Academic Surgery offers one $20,000 Geoffrey Dunn MD Research Award in Surgical Palliative Care for direct research costs during July 1, 2027–March 1, 2029. Projects may use quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, implementation science, or other approaches addressing topics such as symptom control, surgical decision-making, communication, ethics, education, epidemiology, or health care delivery; physician-assisted suicide and other divisive topics are excluded. Applicants must be active AAS members, full-time faculty within the first 10 years of practice, and must not have received an NIH R01 or equivalent, hold an R01/VA Merit Review or career development award, or use funds for salary or indirect costs. Applications are due September 18, 2026, and require a cover letter, NIH-style biosketch, five-page research plan, budget, mentor letter, and department chair letter submitted as one PDF.
