Theodore Rousseau Fellowship

About this program

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Theodore Rousseau Fellowship supports independent scholars conducting research related to The Met’s collections that requires close study of painting collections, archives, and scholarly resources in Europe. The off-site fellowship provides a Met supervisor, a stipend of $53,000 for junior fellows or $63,000 for senior fellows, up to $6,000 for research travel, and health-insurance support for the September 2027–August 2028 period. PhD candidates and scholars holding a PhD or with established senior status are eligible; applicants must propose a specific project engaging deeply with European painting collections and relevant Met holdings. Applications, including a statement of interest, work and travel schedules, CV, three recommendations, and transcripts for junior applicants, are due online in English by October 15, 2026, at 5 p.m. ET; international applicants must have or obtain appropriate U.S. work authorization.
