About this program

The Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) offers the biennial Vincent P. DeSantis Book Prize for the best first book on any aspect of United States history from 1865 to 1920. The winner is honored at the annual SHGAPE luncheon and receives a certificate and honorarium. Eligible books must be written in English, be the author’s first book, and have been published within the previous two years; authors or publishers must submit copies to all three committee members by October 15, 2026. Final page proofs may be submitted for books published October 15–December 31, 2026, provided bound copies follow in January.
