Virginia Humanities Major Grants

About this program

Virginia Humanities’ Major Grants provide $5,000–$15,000 for cultural nonprofits developing public humanities projects that engage broad audiences with history, literature, and culture. Awards support initiatives such as community discussions, exhibitions, oral histories, educational resources, media projects, and festivals over an 18-month performance period, with full payment issued after the award decision.

Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits or other approved organizations and must submit an approved Letter of Intent before applying. Applicants may submit to only one opportunity per cycle, must have no more than one active Virginia Humanities grant, and must provide both cash and in-kind cost share; applications are due October 16, 2026.
