Visiting Research Scholar Fellowship Program in Ethnic Studies

About this program

UCLA’s Institute of American Cultures offers in-residence Visiting Research Scholar Fellowships in Ethnic Studies to support research on African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Chicanas/os, particularly projects addressing recent demographic shifts, intra-group heterogeneity, and interethnic contact. Awards may provide up to $35,000 for three quarters (prorated for shorter appointments) plus up to $4,000 in research support; funds are paid through the scholar’s home institution and may supplement sabbatical support without exceeding current institutional salary. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a PhD or appropriate terminal degree by the time of appointment and hold a permanent academic appointment; UCLA faculty, staff, and enrolled students are ineligible. No applications are being accepted for 2026–2027—check back in September 2026 for the 2027–2028 competition; the program typically opens mid‑October, closes mid‑January, and notifies awardees in March.
