I became a research administrator without even realizing it! I’m sure that’s a story shared by many of us! I was a research assistant at a big SEC university and found that our research team needed someone to managed sponsor communications and financial reporting. I didn’t love doing research, so I offered to be that person. I spent four years splitting my time between a “project manager” role and research assistant. At that point, I still didn’t know what a research administrator even was. I then relocated to the west coast and while looking for a position in higher ed, located a job posting in a sponsored projects office…..and the rest is history. Over a 9-year period, I worked my way up to management in that office and now work for a large ed tech corporation managing their grants portfolio.
