AFSH Basic Science Grants

About this program

The American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand (AFSH) and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) offer Basic Science Grants to support exploratory, high‑risk/high‑reward basic science studies of the hand and upper limb and to enable pilot projects that may lead to subsequent funding. Awards provide up to $60,000 total in direct costs ($30,000 per year for one or two years), with up to 75% (~$22,500) disbursed at the start of each grant year and the remaining 25% (~$7,500) released after an approved six‑month progress report. Eligible investigators may propose pilot studies, self‑contained research, or development of research methodology/technology related to the hand/upper limb; preliminary data are not required and projects are modeled similarly to an NIH R03.
