Research funding
Private
9,745 open programsCatalog updated
Private research funding means everything that is not a government agency and not a university: foundations, professional societies and corporations. Together that is the large majority of the open programs in this catalog, and the part of the funding world most research offices track worst.
The reason is structural. Federal opportunities arrive through a handful of portals everyone already watches. Private opportunities are published on several thousand separate websites, in no common format, with no shared deadline calendar. A program can open and close without anyone at your institution seeing it.

This page groups the three sponsor types so you can see how they differ. Foundations are the biggest and most varied. Societies are the most numerous and the most winnable, because their awards are usually restricted to members of one discipline. Corporate programs are the smallest and behave less like grants than like partnerships.
The median across all three is $5,000, which says something real: most private funding is small, specific, and aimed at a person rather than a project.
