Akira Okubo Prize

About this program

The Society for Mathematical Biology, jointly with the Japanese Society for Mathematical Biology, awards the Akira Okubo Prize (junior and senior versions, each given every four years) for outstanding and innovative theoretical work that establishes conceptual advances, solves difficult theoretical problems, or unites theory and data to advance biological subjects. Selection emphasizes originality, breakthrough contributions, new syntheses that open research directions, and demonstrated or expected impact on subsequent studies. Eligible nominees are living scientists at the assistant professor (or equivalent) level for the junior prize or associate/full professor (or equivalent) level for the senior prize; winners are expected to give a plenary talk at the societies’ meetings. Awardees receive a $500 cash prize and a certificate presented at the Society for Mathematical Biology annual meeting.
