Alexander H. and Helen V. Smith Research Award

About this program

The Mycological Society of America funds the Alexander H. and Helen V. Smith Research Award to provide grants‑in‑aid covering all or a significant portion of expenses for researchers to work on Alexander H. Smith’s fleshy macrofungi collections at the University of Michigan Herbarium and, in some cases, to support fieldwork on North American fleshy macrofungi. Awards do not allow indirect costs and are intended to support substantive research visits rather than preliminary studies. Eligible applicants are professional or trained para‑professional mycologists who are MSA members or have applied for membership and whose projects are at a stage where access to Smith materials will advance their work; fieldwork recipients must deposit representative duplicates at the University of Michigan Herbarium. Applications (English, ≤8 MB) must include a CV (≤3 pages), a detailed plan of study (≤5 pages including a 200–250‑word abstract, objectives, methods, significance, budget and timeline), and an approval email from the University of Michigan fungal curator; awardees must acknowledge MSA and submit a short article about their research within one year.
