Barbara Jelavich Book Prize

About this program

The Association for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), supported by the Jelavich estate, awards the annual Barbara Jelavich Book Prize—a cash award presented at the ASEEES Annual Convention—for a distinguished monograph published in the previous calendar year on Southeast European or Habsburg studies since 1600 or 19th–20th‑century Ottoman or Russian diplomatic history. Eligible works are monographs (preferably single‑author or no more than two authors) originally published in English, with the publication date listed as the previous calendar year (copyright date used if no publication date); authors of any nationality are eligible as of 2025. Ineligible items include textbooks, translations (including self‑translations), bibliographies, reference works, and self‑published books. Nominations may be made only by the publisher or author via the ASEEES nomination form, and nominators must send one copy of the book to each committee member and meet the stated deadlines (nomination form by April 15; books received by May 15).
