About this program
The Carter G. Woodson Institute at the University of Virginia offers a two-year residential pre-doctoral fellowship for ABD scholars conducting research in African American and African Diasporic Studies. Fellows receive a $36,000 annual stipend, health insurance, relocation reimbursement of up to $1,000, and up to $2,000 annually for research and travel expenses. Applicants may be of any citizenship or residence and must relocate to Charlottesville for the fellowship, participate in Institute workshops, and periodically present their work. Applications, including a CV, cover letter, project description, writing samples, bibliography, and three recommendation letters, are due December 1, 2026; letters must arrive by December 8.
