Research funding
Graduate student
1,578 open programsCatalog updated
Graduate funding is a volume game. There are more open programs for graduate and doctoral students than for any other career stage in this catalog, and the median award is $3,000. These are not salary. They pay for fieldwork, travel to an archive or a field site, conference attendance, equipment and the specific unfunded line that stalls a dissertation.
Because the awards are small the arithmetic is different. Writing four applications at $3,000 each is a reasonable use of a month when one lands, and a society award restricted to student members can attract a handful of applicants.

The funders are almost entirely disciplinary societies: the Archaeological Institute of America, the Entomological Society of America, the Society for Applied Anthropology, Psi Chi. The Garden Club of America funds more graduate research in botany than its name suggests. Most require membership, and student membership is usually cheap enough that joining to apply is rational.
Travel awards deserve singling out. They are the most winnable and the most overlooked, and the deadline is often only weeks before the meeting.
