About this program

The College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (COM), via the Dean’s office, offers one‑year bridge awards up to $100,000 to sustain established clinical or basic research programs after a major full indirect cost‑bearing competitive grant is not funded, enabling resubmission and reestablishment of extramural support. Awards may not be used for principal investigator salary or travel, and only one award is provided during the unfunded period. Eligible applicants are tenured and non‑tenured faculty with a prior history of extramural funding whose major competitive grant (e.g., R01, R35, NSF) was not funded; programs primarily supported by pilot, infrastructure/core, training, foundation, VA, or industrial awards and PIs with substantial other funding or reserves are ineligible. Applications (single PDF emailed to the Senior Associate Dean for Research) must include a one‑page cover letter addressing critiques, one‑page budget justification, departmental support letter, critique/summary statement, NIH biosketches, and specific aims; awards are reviewed by the Bridge Funding Committee, recommended to the Dean, and require a one‑page progress report at completion.
