COSMOS/EERI/SSA Bruce Bolt Medal

About this program

Offered jointly by COSMOS, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), and the Seismological Society of America (SSA), the Bruce Bolt Medal recognizes individuals worldwide who promote and use strong‑motion earthquake data and whose leadership in translating scientific and engineering knowledge into practice or policy has measurably improved seismic safety. Candidates must meet three selection criteria: promotion of strong‑motion instrumentation or advancement of strong‑motion data processing/utilization; substantive technical contributions in earthquake engineering or engineering seismology; and demonstrated leadership that has transferred knowledge into practice or policy leading to improved seismic safety. Nominations (due annually 30 June) require a chief nominator’s letter (≤2 pages addressing all three criteria), the nominee’s CV, current contact information, three endorsements (letters or signatures), and a signed nominator disclosure; submit via the Google nomination form or, if you lack a Google account, by email to boltmedal@eeri.org. Nominees are reviewed confidentially by a six‑person joint selection committee and the recommended recipient is jointly approved by the three sponsors’ boards.
