Dumbarton Oaks Fellowships and Junior Fellowships (Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, Garden and Landscape Studies)

About this program

Dumbarton Oaks funds academic-year, single-term, and eight-week summer fellowships in Byzantine Studies, Pre‑Columbian Studies, and Garden and Landscape Studies that provide in‑residence research support including stipends (academic-year Fellows $35,000; Junior Fellows $25,000), campus housing or a housing allowance, weekday lunch, and optional fellows’ health insurance; summer awards carry a $300/week maintenance allowance. Academic-year and single-term Fellowships are for holders of terminal degrees, Junior Fellowships are for advanced graduate candidates who have completed preliminary requirements (dissertation-stage preferred), and summer fellowships are for graduate scholars beyond their first post‑baccalaureate year; all recipients must be in residence for the award period. Applications in English are submitted electronically via the Embark portal with two letters of recommendation (Junior Fellows must also upload graduate transcripts); the annual deadline is November 1 with awards announced by March, and current Dumbarton Oaks affiliates are ineligible. Non‑US applicants are sponsored on J‑1 visas (subject to recent J‑status restrictions) and Fellows may receive reimbursement of J‑1 visa fees; awards are prorated for shorter appointments and reappointment interval rules apply.
