E. Ohnuki-Tierney Book Award for Historical Anthropology

About this program

The American Anthropological Association administers the bi‑annual E. Ohnuki‑Tierney Book Award, supported by a gift from Emiko Ohnuki‑Tierney, to honor outstanding books that conceptualize culture as historical processes; the recipient receives an $800 cash prize and a certificate presented at the 2026 AAA Annual Meeting. Eligible works are books published within the preceding two years by a university press or a well‑recognized commercial press and must cover an appropriate historical period, be grounded in both ethnographic and historical materials, and demonstrate critical use of social theory. Nominations require a nominator’s and nominee’s contact information, a copy of the book (PDF or print), a nomination letter (up to three pages) describing the book’s merits, and the author’s CV; AAA will contact publishers for physical copies but nominators may upload digital versions. Submissions open Spring 2026.
