German Studies Research Grant

About this program

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers short-term (one- to two-month) German Studies Research Grants for highly qualified undergraduates (junior and above), master's students, and doctoral candidates to conduct interdisciplinary research on modern and contemporary German affairs, with nomination required from a supervising professor or principal advisor. Applicants must have completed at least two years of college-level German and a minimum of three German Studies courses, be enrolled full-time at the nominating U.S. or Canadian institution, and be U.S./Canadian citizens or permanent residents (or international students enrolled at a U.S./Canadian institution who have been resident in the U.S./Canada for at least six months by the deadline). Awards provide approximately $2,000–$3,000 to offset living and travel costs (not for study-abroad program stays); decisions are typically announced about eight weeks after the May 1 and November 1 deadlines, doctoral applicants whose proposals were accepted one year or more before the deadline are ineligible, and awards are subject to German federal budget ratification.
