Gustav O. Lienhard Award for Advancement of Health Care

The National Academy of Medicine, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, awards the Gustav O. Lienhard Award to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to improving health care services in the United States; the prize includes a medal and $40,000. A NAM-appointed selection committee evaluates nominees primarily on achievement in personal health services (clinical and/or leadership), innovative or pioneering work, and demonstrable national-level impact. Additional criteria include unique contributions, sustained qualitative and quantitative positive change, and success overcoming barriers given available resources. Nominations are being accepted (listed as open until May 20 with no year specified); eligible applicants are individual contributors who meet the stated criteria and the recipient must attend the award ceremony.
