Independent and Public Folklore Travel Stipend (AFS Annual Meeting Award)

The American Folklore Society’s Public Programs and Independent Folklorists sections offer a $1,000 Annual Meeting travel stipend to support an independent folklorist’s attendance (transportation, registration, lodging, and per diem) to present work at the AFS Annual Meeting. Applicants must live at least 100 miles from the meeting, derive a significant portion of their income from independent consulting or independent scholarship, have an accepted proposal for the meeting, plan to attend at least two full days plus the sections’ business meetings, not have presented the same paper previously at AFS, and not have received either Independent Travel Award in the past two years; recipients must also be willing to serve on the selection committee the following year. Apply by June 15 via the AFS application portal with a letter (≤3 pages) describing your planned participation, independent work and income proportion, budget estimate, anticipated benefits, and a current CV; selections are based on quality of work, benefit to the field (especially public programming), budget feasibility, and demonstrated need.
