About this program

The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) offers the Independently Published Pre-publication Grant, awarding $2,500 to offset self-publishing expenses such as illustrators, editors, designers, printing/shipping, book trailers, website development, and publishing software. Submissions are accepted November 1–30 via the AWARDS tab on MEMBER HOME and are evaluated primarily on the quality and professionalism of a 1–2 paragraph synopsis and the strength of a one-page business plan. Applicants must be current SCBWI members at the time of submission and when the award is announced, and awarded funds must be used for self-publishing-related costs. Required materials are a brief cover letter with the proposed book title, publication timeline, short bio, one-page business plan detailing use of funds, and 2–3 sentences explaining the choice to self-publish.
